About Me

Mr John Pitts MB ChB LLM DAvMed FRCP FRCS FRCOphth

I am an ophthalmologist and oculoplastic surgeon with an interest in flying and aviation medicine.

I learned to fly in UGSAS, the Universities of Glasgow and Strathclyde Air Squadron, in a Scottish Aviation Bulldog when I was a second / third year medical student.  As a private pilot in the UK and Barbados, I've flown Tomahawks, Warriors, and Cessnas, turned upside down in an RV8 and hitched rides in Sea King and Merlin helicopters. My hitching high point was a flight in a twin-seat Lightning from RAF Binbrook.

I obtained the Certificate in Aviation Medicine from RAF Farnborough in 1989 and the Diploma in Aviation Medicine from Kings' College London in 2004. I work as a consultant ophthalmic surgeon and AME, and advise the UK Civil Aviation Authority in ophthalmology.
