About me

Mr John Pitts MB ChB LLM DAvMed FRCP FRCS FRCOphth

I am an ophthalmologist and oculoplastic surgeon with an interest in flying and aviation medicine.

I learned to fly in UGSAS, the Universities of Glasgow and Strathclyde Air Squadron, in a Scottish Aviation Bulldog when I was a second / third year medical student.  As a private pilot in the UK and Barbados, I have flown Tomahawks, Warriors, and Cessnas, turned upside down in an RV 8 and hitched rides in Sea King and Merlin helicopters. My hitching high point was a flight in a twin-seat Lightning from RAF Binbrook!

I obtained the Certificate in Aviation Medicine from RAF Farnborough in 1989 and the Diploma in Aviation Medicine from Kings’ College London in 2004. I work as a consultant ophthalmologist, and an independent AME. I am a former consultant adviser in ophthalmology to the CAA, a former medical assessor at the CAA, a former AME for NATS, the National Air Traffic Service, and part of the current AME team at Heathrow Medical Services.
