About me

Mr John Pitts BSc (Hons) MB ChB LLM DAvMed FRCP FRCS FRCOphth

I am a former NHS substantive consultant ophthalmologist with an interest in flying and aviation medicine.

I learned to fly in UGSAS (the Universities of Glasgow and Strathclyde Air Squadron) in a Scottish Aviation Bulldog as a second & third year medical student. As a private pilot I have flown Tomahawks, Warriors, and Cessnas, turned upside down in an RV-8 and hitched rides in Sea King and Merlin helicopters. I was once VERY lucky to be taken up in a twin-seat Lightning from RAF Binbrook.

Pursuing my interest in aviation and space medicine, I obtained the Certificate in Aviation Medicine from RAF Farnborough in 1989, then the Diploma in Aviation Medicine from Kings’ College London in 2004.

I work as a freelance private consultant ophthalmologist, and an independent AME. I am a former consultant adviser in ophthalmology to the CAA, a former medical assessor at the CAA, a former AME for NATS, and am an independent AME as well as a member of the AME team at Heathrow Medical Services AeMC.
